Rockingham County is located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Virginia. Its county seat is the independent city of Harrisonburg. Approximately 80,000 people reside in Rockingham County and they enjoy a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot, humid summers and mild to severely cold winters. It is part of the larger Harrisonburg Metropolitan Statistical Area.
A Brief History of Rockingham County
The county’s beginnings were set in motion in 1727 when settler Adam Miller claimed land on the south fork of the Shenandoah River. While traveling through eastern Virginia, Miller heard rumors about a beautiful and lush area discovered by Governor Alexander Spotswood’s legendary Knights of the Golden Horseshoe Expedition in the previous decade. He decided to take a chance on the land and moved his family there from Pennsylvania. They purchased 820 acres, including a lithia water spring. They lived there for the remainder of their lives. The county was established in 1778 from part of neighboring Augusta County. President Abraham Lincoln’s father was born in Rockingham County that same year.
Rockingham County Today
Modern-day Rockingham County is the site of two universities and is home to a large refugee and immigrant population. The deeply entrenched agricultural culture is alive and well in the county even now. It is still the largest producer of poultry in the state and is referred to as the “Turkey Capital of Virginia.” Its annual county fair is one of the best-attended in the country and is influenced by the large old-order-Mennonite farming presence.
